NI WORK COMPLETION AT SANTRAGACHI

The Construction Dept./SER & The Kharagpur Division has successfully completed the non-Interlocking in connection with the yard remodeling and commissioning of Electronic Interlocking with 533 Routes at Santragachi Junction on 18.05.2025.

The railways had undertaken the work of yard modelling in phased manner. 13 days Pre to Pre NI was carried out from 30th April 2025 to 12th May 2025. 5 days Pre NI from 13th May 2025 to 17th May 2025 and on 18th May 2025, i.e. the final day, the Final work of Non Interlocking & commissioning was taken up during a complete traffic block of 7 hours.

The rigorous development work involved hundreds of man-hours of installation and testing. Generally, work of this nature and magnitude, involving major yard remodeling, is commissioned by resorting to non-interlocked working for several days, resulting in severe disruption of railway traffic and public inconvenience from cancellation and late running of trains. To avoid such situations, innovative planning was done for commissioning the work by taking well planned traffic blocks during the 18 days of the development work, thereby ensuring bare minimum traffic disruptions and passenger inconvenience. It speaks volumes of the planning and preparation by the South Eastern Railway.

The commissioning of the new Electronic Interlocking has integrated

Two (02) additional platforms at Santragachi

Platform Extension of the existing platforms so as to accommodate full length coaching trains and elimination of Diamond crossings.

Elimination of the surface crossing of the line from the railway bridge at Sankrail towards Santragchi, resulting in easing out the traffic movement in the down line in SANTRAGACHI – ANDUL section.

To ensure highest level of availability and flexibility, this EI has been provided in a distributed manner with the interlocking distributed over 6 zones interconnected with highly reliable Optical Fibre Cables (OFC). Facility has been provided for the setting of routes and clearing of signals from electronic Video Display Unit (VDU) using “Mouse & Key Board”.

With the commissioning of EI system at Santragachi Junction the movement of trains over South Eastern Railway will get eased up considerably and result in improved punctuality of Mail/Express trains and increase in average speed of the trains. Also, with the increase of platforms and extension of the existing platforms, Mail/Express trains can be more easily admitted to the platforms which were earlier accommodating only suburban trains due to length constraint.

Today, on the final day of the NI work, Shri Rajeev Shrivastava, CAO(Construction)/GRC and Shri K.R. Chaudhary, DRM Kharagpur along with the divisional and HQ officers were present at Santragachi Station for commissioning of the new Electronic Interlocking.
