IIT खड़गपुर ने सफलतापूर्वक आयोजित किया ISRO STC सम्मेलन 2025, अंतरिक्ष अनुसंधान में ISRO-अकादमिक सहयोग को किया सशक्त

भारतीय अंतरिक्ष अनुसंधान संगठन (ISRO), अंतरिक्ष विभाग, भारत सरकार द्वारा भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान (IIT) खड़गपुर के सहयोग से 1-2 जुलाई, 2025 को द्वितीय ISRO स्पेस टेक्नोलॉजी सेल (STC) सम्मेलन का आयोजन किया गया। यह कार्यक्रम अंतरिक्ष प्रौद्योगिकी में अनुसंधान आधारित प्रगति हेतु भारत की प्रमुख शैक्षणिक संस्थाओं और राष्ट्रीय अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी के बीच समन्वय को मजबूती प्रदान करने की दिशा में एक महत्वपूर्ण कदम साबित हुआ।

इस सम्मेलन का उद्घाटन डॉ. वी. नारायणन, सचिव, अंतरिक्ष विभाग; अध्यक्ष, ISRO; और अध्यक्ष, अंतरिक्ष आयोग, भारत सरकार द्वारा किया गया। उद्घाटन सत्र में ISRO के वैज्ञानिक सचिव श्री एम. गणेश पिल्लै; ISRO के CBPO निदेशक श्री जी. हरिकृष्णन; IIT खड़गपुर के निदेशक प्रो. सुमन चक्रवर्ती; अनुसंधान एवं विकास डीन प्रो. रबीब्रत मुखर्जी; KCSTC की चेयरपर्सन एवं STC संयोजक प्रो. देबरति सेन समेत अनेक प्रतिष्ठित अतिथियों ने भाग लिया।

ISRO और अंतरिक्ष विभाग द्वारा संचालित स्पेस टेक्नोलॉजी सेल (STC) पिछले तीन दशकों से देश के नौ प्रमुख संस्थानों में कार्यरत हैं – IIT खड़गपुर, IIT मद्रास, IIT दिल्ली, IIT बॉम्बे, IIT कानपुर, IIT गुवाहाटी, IIT रुड़की, IISc बेंगलुरु, और सावित्रीबाई फुले पुणे विश्वविद्यालय। ये सेल अंतरिक्ष प्रौद्योगिकी के क्षेत्र में अनुसंधान और नवाचार को प्रोत्साहित करते हैं तथा ISRO और शिक्षाविदों के बीच दीर्घकालिक सहयोग को बढ़ावा देते हैं।

2019 में IIT मद्रास में आयोजित प्रथम ISRO STC सम्मेलन की नींव पर आधारित यह 2025 संस्करण, IIT खड़गपुर में आयोजित किया गया, जिसमें देशभर के अनुसंधानकर्ताओं, STC संयोजकों, फैकल्टी सदस्यों, और प्रमुख अन्वेषकों ने भाग लिया। दो दिवसीय कार्यक्रम में शोध निष्कर्षों का आदान-प्रदान, सफल परियोजनाओं की प्रस्तुति, और ISRO द्वारा STC अनुसंधान के उपयोग पर चर्चा हुई।

कार्यक्रम की मुख्य विशेषता ISRO द्वारा वित्तपोषित हालिया शोध परियोजनाओं की सफलता की कहानियों की प्रस्तुति रही, जो राष्ट्रीय अंतरिक्ष अभियानों के लिए अकादमिक शोध के उपयोग को दर्शाती हैं।

कार्यक्रम के दौरान ISRO के अध्यक्ष डॉ. वी. नारायणन और IIT खड़गपुर के निदेशक प्रो. सुमन चक्रवर्ती के बीच एक विशेष चर्चा हुई, जिसमें IIT खड़गपुर की प्लेटिनम जुबली (18 अगस्त 2025 से 17 अगस्त 2026) के अवसर पर संभावित संयुक्त कार्यक्रमों पर विचार किया गया।

IIT खड़गपुर इस राष्ट्रीय मिशन का हिस्सा बनकर गर्व महसूस करता है और ISRO व अन्य संस्थानों के साथ मिलकर अत्याधुनिक अंतरिक्ष अनुसंधान में योगदान देना जारी रखेगा।

कल्‍पना चावला स्‍पेस टेक्‍नोलॉजी सेल (KCSTC), IIT खड़गपुर के बारे में

1970 के दशक से ही IIT खड़गपुर कई ISRO-प्रायोजित RESPOND कार्यक्रमों और विभिन्न ISRO प्रयोगशालाओं के साथ समझौता ज्ञापनों (MoUs) के माध्यम से अंतरिक्ष परियोजनाओं में संलग्न रहा है। जुलाई 1998 में ISRO और IIT खड़गपुर के बीच सहयोग को और सशक्त करने के उद्देश्य से स्पेस टेक्नोलॉजी सेल (STC) की स्थापना की गई। वर्ष 2004 में इस सेल का नाम बदलकर कल्‍पना चावला स्‍पेस टेक्‍नोलॉजी सेल (KCSTC) रखा गया — NASA की अंतरिक्ष यात्री डॉ. कल्‍पना चावला के सम्मान में, जो अंतरिक्ष में जाने वाली पहली भारतीय मूल की महिला थीं। इस सेल की नई इमारत का उद्घाटन 17 नवंबर 2004 को ISRO अध्यक्ष श्री जी. माधवन नायर द्वारा किया गया था।

ISRO ने IIT खड़गपुर द्वारा विकसित कई महत्वपूर्ण अंतरिक्ष तकनीकी अनुसंधानों को सराहा और अपनाया है। दोनों संस्थानों ने इस बात को स्वीकारा है कि भारत के आत्मनिर्भर अंतरिक्ष कार्यक्रम के लिए गहन अकादमिक अनुसंधान द्वारा मौलिक ज्ञान का निर्माण अत्यंत आवश्यक है। KCSTC इस दिशा में एक अनूठा मंच है, जो अंतरविषयी सहयोग और ‘मेक इन इंडिया’ अभियान को बढ़ावा देता है।

STC की गतिविधियों का संचालन संयुक्त नीति समिति (JPC) करती है, जिसमें IIT खड़गपुर के निदेशक द्वारा नामित 7 और ISRO अध्यक्ष द्वारा नामित 10 सदस्य शामिल होते हैं। निदेशक, IIT खड़गपुर इस समिति के पदेन अध्यक्ष होते हैं।

KCSTC और ISRO के सहयोग से वर्ष 2020 से अब तक कुल 39 परियोजनाएं पूर्ण हुई हैं। इनके माध्यम से प्राप्त प्रमुख उपलब्धियाँ इस प्रकार हैं:

KCSTC के लिए एक 3000 वर्गफुट का भवन भी निर्मित किया गया है। आने वाले 5 वर्षों में ISRO द्वारा लगभग ₹25 करोड़ का वित्तीय सहयोग अपेक्षित है।

KCSTC का एक और प्रमुख उद्देश्य है शिक्षा और क्षमता निर्माण। इसके अंतर्गत स्पेस टेक्नोलॉजी स्टूडेंट सोसाइटी (SPATS) नामक छात्र संगठन कार्य करता है, जो 2011 से नेशनल स्टूडेंट्स स्पेस चैलेंज (NSSC) नामक वार्षिक फेस्ट का आयोजन करता आ रहा है। इस फेस्ट के माध्यम से खगोल विज्ञान, अंतरिक्ष प्रौद्योगिकी में छात्रों की रुचि बढ़ाने के लिए व्याख्यान, चर्चा, स्टारगेजिंग, और प्रेजेंटेशन आयोजित किए जाते हैं, जो राष्ट्रीय शिक्षा नीति 2020 की भावना के अनुरूप हैं।

IIT Kharagpur Successfully Hosts ISRO STC Confluence 2025 to Strengthen ISRO-Academia Collaboration in Space Research

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Space, Government of India, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, organized the 2nd ISRO Space Technology Cell (STC) Confluence on July 1–2, 2025. The event marks a significant step forward in fostering synergy between India’s premier academic institutions and the national space agency, with a focus on research-driven advancements in space technology.

The Confluence was inaugurated by Dr. V. Narayanan, Secretary, Department of Space; Chairman, ISRO; and Chairman, Space Commission, Government of India. The inaugural session was graced by Shri M. Ganesh Pillai, Scientific Secretary, ISRO; Shri G. Harikrishnan, Director, Capacity Building & Public Outreach (CBPO), ISRO; Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Director, IIT Kharagpur; Prof. Rabibrata Mukherjee, Dean (R&D), IIT Kharagpur; and Prof. Debarati Sen, STC Convener & Chairperson, Kalpana Chawla Space Technology Cell (KCSTC), IIT Kharagpur, along with several distinguished dignitaries from ISRO and academic institutions.

The Space Technology Cells, established and operated for nearly three decades by ISRO and the Department of Space, Government of India, are functional at nine premier institutions across the country: IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee, IISc Bengaluru, and Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune. These STCs serve as focused research hubs driving innovations in space-related technologies and nurturing long-term collaboration between academia and ISRO.

Building on the foundation laid by the first ISRO STC Confluence held at IIT Madras in 2019, the 2025 edition at IIT Kharagpur brought together researchers, STC conveners, faculty members, and principal investigators from across these institutions. The two-day program served as a platform to exchange research findings, showcase success stories, and deliberate on ISRO’s integration and application of STC research outputs.

The key highlight of the program was the presentation of success stories achieved through ISRO-funded projects in the recent past, demonstrating impactful outcomes of academic research aligned with national space missions. The Confluence included research presentations by STC conveners, deliberations among faculty members, and discussions with principal investigators on the effective utilization of research outputs by ISRO.

On the sidelines of the event, Chairman ISRO Dr. V. Narayanan and Director IIT Kharagpur Prof. Suman Chakraborty engaged in a meaningful discussion on potential collaborative programs to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of IIT Kharagpur, which marks 75 years of the Institute’s founding from 18th August 2025 to 17th August 2026. The conversation highlighted the shared vision of both institutions in advancing national science and technology goals during this historic milestone year.

About the Kalpana Chawla Space Technology Cell (KCSTC), IIT Kharagpur

Since the 1970s, IIT Kharagpur has been involved with a good number of ISRO-sponsored projects through RESPOND programs and through MOUs with individual ISRO Laboratories. Space Technology Cell (STC) was set up in July 1998 to boost the collaborative research programs between ISRO and IIT Kharagpur. In 2004, the Cell was renamed the Kalpana Chawla Space Technology Cell (KCSTC) after the celebrated NASA astronaut Dr. Kalpana Chawla who was the first woman of Indian origin to fly into space. The new building of KCSTC was inaugurated on November 17, 2004, by Shri. G. Madhavan Nair, Chairman, ISRO, and Secretary, Department of Space, Government of India.

Since its inception, ISRO has recognized and extensively used various research efforts in space-related technologies developed at IIT Kharagpur. Both organizations have recognized the need to generate fundamental knowledge through advanced academic research to enable a truly self-reliant and self-generating space program for our country. The KCSTC offers a unique platform for interdisciplinary, collaboration-driven infusion of advanced technologies in the space science area, which is in harmony with the ‘Make-in-India’ initiative of the Government of India. The Joint Policy Committee (JPC) governs the activities of the Space Technology Cell, IIT Kharagpur. It consists of 7 members nominated by the Director, IIT Kharagpur, and 10 members nominated by the Chairman, ISRO, with the Director, IIT Kharagpur, as ex-officio Chairman.

Through this collaboration, 39 projects have been completed from 2020 to date. Under deliverables, the number of patents generated is 6, journal publications is 150, publications in conferences is 68, prototype delivered is 11, methodology developed is 19, report generated is 39, manpower trained is 85, and PhD awarded is 28. A 3,000 sq. ft. building has been constructed to house the Space Technology Cell. More than Rs. 25 crore is expected to be provided by ISRO to KCSTC during the next 5 years.

Other than research, the KCSTC also focuses on education and capacity building. The Space Technology Student Society (SPATS) is a student initiative that functions as the student body of the KCSTC. It organizes the annual Space Technology and Astronomy themed fest, National Students’ Space Challenge (NSSC), every year since 2011. It thus ignites a passion for space science among the students by organizing talks, discussions, stargazing sessions, lectures, and presentations, which align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 initiative of the Government of India.
